Artist: Joseph Cornell

Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) was an American artist and sculptor best known for his intricate box constructions and collages. Cornell's art was highly idiosyncratic and often included found objects such as old photographs, toys, and other ephemera.

He was born in Nyack, New York, and lived most of his life in Queens, New York. Cornell had a reclusive personality and was known to be shy and introverted. He never married and lived with his mother and disabled brother for most of his life.

Cornell's art is often associated with the Surrealist movement, although he was not formally affiliated with the group. His works often feature dreamlike imagery and unusual juxtapositions of objects, which create a sense of mystery and nostalgia.

Some of his most famous works include "Medici Slot Machine" (1942), "Pharmacy" (1943-1944), and "The Hotel Eden" (1945). Today, his work is highly regarded and can be found in the collections of major museums around the world.
